Day 2

Qey [kwey] students! Today, is Wolastoqey Treaty Day, which is a day to honour the Peace and Friendship Treaties. These agreements were built on a promise of respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility between the Wolastoqewiyik [wool-us-to-gwe-yeg], other Wabanaki Nations and the British Crown.

The word treaty in the Wolastoqey language is Lakutuwakon (lah-goo-doo-wah-gon], which literally means “the action of creating a family relationship”. A treaty is a promise to share and work together to resolve differences, “for as long as the sun and the moon endure”.

Exactly 300 years ago, on June 4, 1726, the Wolastoqewiyik [wool-us-to-gwe-yeg] finalized a treaty with the British government that became the foundation for the chain of Peace and Friendship treaties. The Peace and Friendship treaties are still in force today and apply to all people living in New Brunswick. These treaties secure the rights of Wabanaki and non-Wabanaki people and also, come with a responsibility to share the land and to take care of it for all future generations.

Wolastoqey Treaty Day is a reminder that treaties are living agreements that continue to shape our responsibilities to one another. We are all treaty people.

Art: Calling all Artists…  If you would like to have your artwork included in the Year-End Talent Show, please take your creative work to the art room any day this week during the 2nd half of lunch to get it photographed by Mrs. Stoddart.  It can be artwork you have created at school or at home, and can be any medium…  Drawing, Painting, Pottery, Crochet, Quill Art, Oil Pastel, Sewing, Covered Bridge drawings, Abstract Landscapes, Graffiti Name…  We can’t wait to see YOUR art on display at the Year End Talent Show!

Tech: For the remainder of this week and until the end of next week, the computers in the Tech Lab are reserved for grade 8 students who need to finish their Tech assignments. The room is still open for others during the second half of lunch but computers are for grade 8 work only.

Music:

All Beginner Band and Singing Club members who are going on the elementary band tour need to have your emergency contact form filled out.  This was sent by email.  If you would rather take a paper copy home, please see Ms. Rattray.

If you were one of the songwriters in QMS Reads with Hilary, there is going to be an exciting opportunity to record the songs next week.  Please see Ms. Rattray to receive information about this.

Wednesday, May 17th is the last QMS Talent Show of the year!  Sign up for an audition outside of the Music room.  Auditions will start Friday and continue next week!

Athletics: Track and Field – Good Luck to all athletes today! You will be called to the cafeteria at 11:30 to eat before boarding the bus at 11:50. Please bring your lunch and everything you need for the afternoon when you come down to the cafeteria.

Chris Saunders Elementary School is hosting their Annual Kick Off to Summer Event on Thursday, June 11th. The committee is looking for student volunteers to help with games and activities. Volunteers will be needed from 5-7:45 pm on Thursday, June 11th.

Daily Affirmation – I am generous

PRIDE Passes – A grade 6 student was motivated and showed wonderful participation in Math class. A grade 7 student helped get the classroom ready for the day.

Tu/Wednesday Trivia – (Stanley Cup Finals)
